Why I Love Green Lake—and Why You Might Too
Green Lake is one of Seattle’s most beloved neighborhoods, and for good reason. It offers a perfect mix of urban convenience and outdoor recreation, making it an ideal place for anyone who loves an active lifestyle. Whether you’re a runner, cyclist, kayaker, or someone who simply enjoys a scenic walk, Green Lake has something for you. Here’s why so many people—myself included—are drawn to this vibrant neighborhood.
The Iconic Green Lake Loop
At the heart of the neighborhood is Green Lake itself, a picturesque body of water surrounded by a 2.8-mile paved loop. It’s perfect for walking, jogging, biking, or rollerblading, with stunning views of the lake year-round. The loop also connects to Woodland Park and its extensive trails, making it a go-to spot for both casual strollers and serious athletes.
Walkability and Community Feel
One of the things I love most about Green Lake is its walkability. With a Walk Score consistently in the high 80s, it’s easy to get around without a car. Coffee shops, restaurants, fitness studios, and grocery stores are all within walking distance, and the sidewalks are always bustling with people. It’s a true community where neighbors frequently cross paths, adding to the friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
A Hub for Water Activities
Green Lake isn’t just for land-based activities—paddleboarding, kayaking, and even swimming are incredibly popular, especially in the summer months. The Green Lake Boathouse offers rentals, and on warm days, you’ll see rowers, canoers, and picnickers enjoying the lakeside setting. If you love being near the water, this neighborhood delivers.
Plenty of Fitness and Wellness Options
Beyond the lake itself, Green Lake is home to yoga studios, Pilates classes, CrossFit gyms, and dance studios, making it an ideal place for those who prioritize health and wellness. The Evans Pool, an indoor public swimming pool, and the Green Lake Community Center also offer a variety of fitness programs. There’s no shortage of ways to stay active here.
Great Dining and Relaxation Spots
After a workout or a leisurely stroll, Green Lake has plenty of places to grab a coffee or a meal. Some of my favorites include Retreat, Revolutions Coffee, and Zoka Coffee. If you’re looking for a bite to eat, you can grab a healthy bowl at Naked City Smoothies or indulge in a burger from Teddy’s Bigger Burgers. On sunny days, many people opt for takeout and a lakeside picnic—one of the best ways to enjoy Green Lake.
Proximity to Other Outdoor Spaces
Another great thing about Green Lake is its connection to other outdoor spots. Woodland Park, Phinney Ridge, and Ravenna Park are all nearby, offering additional trails, off-leash dog areas, and playgrounds. Cyclists can easily hop onto the Interurban Trail or the Burke-Gilman Trail for longer rides.
Is Green Lake Right for You?
If you love an active lifestyle and want the perfect balance of nature, walkability, and community charm, Green Lake is hard to beat. Whether you’re looking to buy or rent, this neighborhood offers a unique blend of outdoor adventure and city convenience.
